Thee BlackDoor Blues: Tokyo's Dynamic Blues Duo

Self-described as a "garage noise" band, Thee Blackdoor Blues are comprised of rocking newlyweds Jocelyn and Naoto. I won't dare to presume anything about their "alone time", but if the raw, soulful blend of blues, rock, and garage influences that brings these two to life is any indication, I'm sure Jocelyn is a very happy woman. Or should I say, Naoto a very happy man?

Jocelyn’s vocal style is one of the defining elements of Thee BlackDoor Blues. With a voice that blends the raw emotionality of blues with the intensity of rock, she takes you through a range of emotions. Her guitar playing is similarly powerful, bringing a raw energy to each riff and chord. Whether she’s singing sultry ballads or belting out high-octane rock anthems, Jocelyn’s presence is undeniable. She really gives 100% every time. What's more, she will occassionally break out the harmonica and start whailing. What more can you ask for?

Behind the drum kit, Naoto provides the pulse that drives Thee Blackdoor Blues’ sound. His drumming is often simple yet incredibly effective, creating a foundation for Jocelyn's vocals and guitar to shine. He brings a rhythmic precision and laid-back groove to the band’s tracks while maintaining a sense of spontaneity in live performances. He also plays the guitar at the same time, so, really, he's a one-man rhythm section. Within that dynamic, the synergy between Jocelyn and Naoto is palpable, with each member pushing the other to the max. Here is a clip of them playing a couple of their classics:

Thee BlackDoor Blues are known for their fusion of blues, rock, and garage elements. Their music carries the influence of classic blues artists while also tapping into the energy and rebellious spirit of garage rock. The songs are raw and stripped-down, often with a lo-fi production style that enhances their underground aesthetic. Jocelyn’s sultry vocals and Naoto’s steady, sometimes minimalist drumming create an infectious groove that feels intimate and immediate.

The simplicity of their setup doesn’t detract from the depth of their sound—instead, it’s a testament to their ability to create something powerful with just the two of them. The bluesy guitar riffs, combined with Jocelyn’s haunting voice and Naoto’s steady drumming, evoke the spirit of classic blues while maintaining a contemporary, punk-rock edge. In a world of polished, formulaic music, Thee BlackDoor Blues bring something real—music that speaks to the heart, soul, and the underground spirit of rock and blues.
